Cersaie and art

In 2007, CreativiTiles was the name of the exhibition organized to celebrate the Cersaie 25th edition. The idea at the basis of the exhibit was to use tiles that were on the market to create the atmosphere of famous pictorial works.
The 2008 exhibition, named Ceramic Tiles of Italy Architectural Food purposes that even food has its own architecture and that Italian tiles have the necessary compositional flexibility to offer new and original solutions for food consumption areas.
The event focuses on two fundamental aspects of ceramic tiles: industrial-level production, based on technical and aesthetic innovation, and the creativity of designers who use mass-produced products to interpret the theme of food, one of the key sectors of Italian production.
The eleven different showcased solutions each have a unique identity while sharing a common aspect: they are all homely, hospitable objects that bring creativity to the culinary tradition, particularly that of Italy.

“Architecture is becoming more fluid. The standard is no longer the square tile only. Formal language emerges from lines of force and space develops fluidly in response to rapidly evolving conditions and technologies. Process and materials need to evolve and adapt to contemporary conditions to remain relevant and current in architecture. Fluidity enables the continued emergence of innovation of materials; materials that accommodate the double curve or the 3rd dimension for curvilinear spaces represent immense potential and creativity for architecture and design.”

This is the idea that inspired Thom Mayne in his design for the poster for Cersaie 2008.
Thom Mayne is the director of Morphosys Studio, one of the foundators of Southern California Institute of Architecture and he has held teaching position at UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture of Los Angeles.
